When this material ignites, a metal container is placed over the sculpture to contain the the smoke and to enable the flames to consume the oxygen inside the container. This reduced-oxygen atmosphere heavily smokes the unglazed surfaces,
turning them black, and creates a varied color and pronounced crackle in
the glaze.
